Last year’s Sophomore Class during Jag Day

It’s almost time for Homecoming in Palestine at the high school, an annual event that includes a football game, a dance, and a week of activities leading up to both.   Caleb Will, math teacher and the sponsor of Student Senate at PHS, will be in charge of the setup and the entire Homecoming week.

“We want to do things a little bit differently this year,” says Mr. Will. Mr. Will had planned for the dance to take place after the Homecoming game and be a casual event where no one would dress super fancy and instead would just have a good time. This would have allowed PHS to put on a Winter Formal in December, but most students wanted to have the dance the day after the game because many girls have already bought their dresses.

Even though Homecoming will stay formal this year, Mr. Will said, “This year we are doing another change with coronation and moving it to the football game. The halftime drive around/introduction that we have done in the past will be altered and we are doing coronation during this time.”

While nothing will change this year, next year the homecoming committee predicts we will have a casual dance after the game and we will have a winter formal in December.

The committee has not come up with a Homecoming dance theme yet, but they are all meeting very soon to discuss logistics.

There is a lot more to Homecoming than just the dance, though.   Leading up to the game and dance, students celebrate Homecoming week. All the classes dress up in silly costumes all week in order to earn points toward Jag Day. Jag Day is an entire afternoon of outdoor games on the football field where each class goes against the other to prove who is the superior class.

Homecoming is one of the biggest events of the year.  Each class makes their own t-shirts and makes their own float that has to do with our football opponent. Last years opponent and this years will be the Villa Grove Blue Devils. There are always very creative ideas for the float ideas and the float judged most creative earn more points for their class.

This year’s homecoming will be one to remember!
