The True Importance of Sleep

Macy Biggs, contributor

There are many reasons why a person needs to get the right amount asleep, and among those reasons are, sleep helps to regulate hormones, blood sugar levels, growth, and development.  Sleep also allows the brain to operate well and improve performances in activities. Lack of sleep can affect the heart, because rest allows this organ to slow itself and recoup from the day’s bodily stresses.  Due to misregulation of hormones, obesity is also a symptom of deficient sleep. Sleep affects so many things in our bodies, and we need to try our best to get a sufficient amount of it!

Sleep is something that is necessary for us humans to function properly, and it is often neglected, which can lead to short-term and long-term problems.  The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institutes states that people ages 13-18 should get eight to ten hours of sleep every night. Getting enough sleep protects physical health, mental health, quality of living, and well-being.  It is often said that sleep habits are just as critical as nutrition and exercise to an organism!

To the body, sleep gives it the energy and relief to function properly, keeping us humans healthy.  It does a number of things to our bodies, such as regulates hormones and blood sugar levels as well as stress.  The importance of sleep is so great and make sure your sleep is healthy and helpful to your body!
