Residents across southern Illinois are experiencing a sharp change in weather as a cold front moves through the region. After several days of mild fall conditions, many people were surprised with how quickly the temperatures dropped.
A strong cold front is sweeping across the area, replacing mild fall air with much colder and drier air. Temperatures, which had previously been in the 60’s earlier in the day, quickly fell into the 30’s by nightfall. The cold front brought gusty northwestern winds, with a wind chill of 17 degrees, rapidly falling temperatures, and even some snow. The daytime highs for this week are expected to range from the 30’s to upper 40’s.
The cold front moved through southern Illinois during the night on November 8th, marking a clear and crisp transition from unseasonably mild weather conditions earlier in the week. The cold air will linger through the week, with gradual warming expected by midweek.
The front formed as part of a larger weather pattern that was drawing icy arctic air southward into the Midwest and other regions. As the cold air replaced warm air, temperatures plunged quickly, signaling the end of the region’s mild weather and the arrival of a more winter-like weather pattern.
