History of Christmas

Allison Dunlap, editor

Christmas is a holiday celebrated and loved by most. People all around the world observe this holiday in religious and nonreligious ways.  It is the festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. The traditional Christmas narrative, the Nativity of Jesus, is based on the New Testament saying that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Christmas Day has been a federal holiday in the United States ever since 1870.

Many people celebrate this holiday by putting up a Christmas tree, baking cookies and desserts, and of course waiting on Santa to bring presents on Christmas morning. Almost 30 to 35 million real Christmas trees are sold in the United States alone. Church groups and volunteer organizations go around caroling to spread Christmas cheer. Some people even travel across the country to be with their families.
