Volleyball Season Starts!

The Lady Tigers played their first game of the season on Wednesday, August 22 against Red Hill. The J.V. team came out very nervous since they were completely new to working together. They still pulled out a win in the first set with the score of 25-15. The second set went a lot better with the first game jitters leaving the court. The second set score was 25-4. J.V. played very well with each other and got their first win of the season.

Varsity came out ready to play a quick game but had some minor problems with communication. Red Hill’s varsity team had good defense and did a good job digging balls that seemed impossible to get to. Macy Biggs had a great blocking game, Mackenzie Stephenson did well at hitting and Allison Dunlap had good passes. Varsity got their first win in two sets, the scores being 25-12 in both sets. Macy Biggs said “that it was a decent game but as long as we keep up with the hard work at practice we’ll start to play with and for each other more.”

Open gyms and workouts went on all through the summer and were open to anyone who was considering playing this season. The coaches saw there was going to be a lot of improvement made from everyone and were excited for the season to start. Shandy Matthews and Stacey Williamson are in their second year of coaching the volleyball team and are looking to change the program around for the best. (Change the program for the best? But you were regional champs last year, right? )They want to produce a team that works well together, wants to win, and wants each girl to work the hardest they can.

Practice started on August 8th including hard workouts and working on  fundamentals. The whole team was excited but nervous for the first game, which was only two and a half weeks away from the first practice. Lots of hard work went into the practices and lots of positive results came out of them too.

Upcoming games for the volleyball team include the Hutsonville tournament on August 25, the first game being at 8 a.m. The first home game will be on August 30 at 5:15 against Dugger.
