What does it mean to be an American? It means to be free, brave, courageous, protected, and united. You also have rights as an American. America is a palace of freedom, liberty, equality, and opportunity. Being in America and being an American are two very different things. Being an American also comes with responsibility.
Being an American to me means you are free, you can make your own choices, you can buy anything you want, you have freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to assemble, and freedom to petition. You also have the right to bear arms, the right of privacy, and you have the right to equal protection. Being an American you can have as many children as you want while in other places you can’t and you can keep your children while in other places they could get taken away just because they aren’t a certain sex. Most people take being an American for granted; they don’t understand how lucky they are just to be free.
Being an American also means you are protected. There are so many people that risk their lives everyday to protect us all, police, firefighters, and the military. These people put their lives on the line everyday just to protect yours. Even though they have families, they still do it everyday, and to me that is bravery, just like their families are brave by letting them risk their lives everyday. These people have so much courage and bravery and they live their lives trying to protect us Americans. They aren’t just firefighters or soldiers, they aren’t just cops, they are heroes that live their life protecting us so that we can be free and happy.
Being in America is so different from being an American. Being in America you still get the protection and the freedom but you don’t get the title of being an American. Being an American is so much more than just the title of being one it’s getting to represent the country and getting to say that you are proud to be an American but there are also people who don’t care they don’t help make America a better place. Being in America is also different from being in America because as Americans we get the full protection of the constitution.
Personally to me being an American means that you are free and you are protected by people that risk their lives for you and to make sure that you are free. The thing that I love most is getting the title of being an American. People don’t realize the title of being an American also gives you freedom. Being an American is so much more than people think it is and it comes with the responsibility of representing and showing how great America actually is. Personally being an American is one of the biggest responsibilities and you get to live your life safe and free.
