The Story Behind the Scene

Friday, October 12, the Drama Department at Lincoln Trail College began performances of the play, “You Can’t Take It With You”. For most people, the actors and actresses are the center of attention but for me and the rest of the Building Trades class, it is so much more than that. The Building and Trades class, under the direction of Mr. Steve Jenkins, built the whole set behind everything, including the walls, the stairs, the doors and trim. We built it all and then we put them in place.

The Drama Department and the director, Barb Shimer, paint the sets. My class cut the wood and screwed them together. Once the play is over my class will come back and we will take everything apart. We store some of the props and we also reuse the wood in other projects when we can.

Honestly, the most difficult part in building the sets is having to move them because they are heavy. This is not the first time that we have done this, nor will it be the last. For every play LTC has had, the Building and Trades class has built sets and the class will continue will build the sets in the future as well.
