Legal Age for Tobacco may move from 18 to 21

Illinois is considering raising the minimum age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21.

This would prohibit the sale of cigarettes, cigars, smoking papers, pipes, loose tobacco, smoking herbs, and e-cigarettes to anyone under 21. Violators of the law will be fined $250- $500, which is the same fine now for tobacco and nicotine related sales to those under 18.

This may be a scare to those who are 18 now, but they will be “grandfathered” in. This is a really big scare to those who are addicted to nicotine and especially Juul’s who will not make the cut. An anonymous individual said, “I am really praying it doesn’t go through because now I am going to have to wait even longer before I can legally buy it.”

Many believe this is supposed to cut down on the purchasing of tobacco products to minors, but if people are grandfathered in, it will not change a thing because they can still purchase it for other people.
