Best Types of Mulch to put in Your Landscaping

Gavin Postlewaite

There are two main types of mulch: organic and inorganic. Organic mulch includes anything that is made from a natural material, such as wood, paper, straw, grass clippings, or compost, that will decompose over time. It does not necessarily mean that the material is free of pesticides or chemicals, although some compost may be. Inorganic mulch includes anything made from synthetic materials, such as rubber mulch or plastic weed cloth.

Mulch is used to create a barrier between the soil underneath and the environment. This can help regulate the temperature of the soil and retain moisture, both beneficial to the roots of plants growing in the mulch. It can also prevent weeds from sprouting, as they do not get sufficient sunlight to germinate and grow.

  • Colored Mulch. Color-enhanced wood mulch is among the most beautiful and best mulch for landscaping. Colorful mulches will give your flower beds and landscape a decorative pop.
  • Mini Pine Nuggets Bark Mulch. Mini pine bark mulch gives your garden a neat, natural look.
  • Topsoil. Topsoil is a nutrient-rich, healthy soil that makes landscape and garden plants grow more effectively.
  • Kids Carpet Playground Mulch. The best mulch for playgrounds is engineered wood fiber. This mulch is specially made for pathways, backyards and underneath play sets or swings.
  • Rubber Mulch. Rubber mulch is often made from recycled rubber material. It can be used for garden beds, but it’s mostly used for creating pathways and ground cover.

I personally would go with a colored mulch in my landscaping. It just looks the best and really draws those passing eyes from people. They definitely think, “Oh wow, what a great looking job they did.” I’m not mulch expert but that’s my opinion.
