History of the SuperBowl

Wesley Adams, Features

The Super Bowl was first created in 1960’s by businessmen who wanted to have their own pro football franchises, but they were also frustrated by the NFL’s unwillingness to expand. The AFL, or American Football League, forged ahead as an alternative league for playing a more wide open brand of football.

The championship game was created as a result of the merger between the National Football League and the newly made American Football league. The first name for the game was originally called the AFL-NFL Championship Game, and then later on a Kansas City Star quoted Hunt in discussing the name “Super Bowl.” That was their term for the championship game between two major leagues, then after the media immediately began using that name and it just stuck.  The first game that started it all was played on January 15, 1967,  and the game was hosted in Los Angeles, California at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

This year will be the counted as the 56th time that Super Bowl has been played, with two major leagues for people to watch and enjoy with their friends and family.
