History of Veterans Day

The history of Veterans Day goes all the way back to 1918. Although World War I, also known as “The Great War”,  officially ended on June 28, 1919, the fighting stopped on November 11, 1918 between the Allied Nations and Germany. President Wilson created Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. Originally, Armistice Day had parades and public meetings. In addition, people were to stop working at 11 a.m.

On June 9, 1926, November 11th became a legal holiday, passed by the legislature. While November 11th had been called Armistice Day, to remember those who had fought in World War I, on June 1, 1954, it became Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Every year we have veterans come to my school to show and tell us what they did.  This year we provided them with a parade and program at the grade school to show them our appreciation for what they have done for us and our country.
