Super Bowl Half-Time Review
February 21, 2019
The Super Bowl is always such a huge event every year, so many people love to watch it and have little parties to go along with it, but the most favorite thing for some people to watch is the Super Bowl halftime show and the commercials. This year was a little different and some people were set back by it, but some enjoyed it. It is always okay to have your own opinions toward things, and this year’s Super Bowl shows that.
This years Super Bowl was played by the Rams and the Patriots. Many people were not too happy about the Patriots playing for the 6th time in their history in the Super Bowl, but that wasn’t the most controversial thing about this years Super Bowl. Although many performers were asked prior to the game to be this year’s performers at the halftime show, most declined. They all had a reason why they did not want to perform, and all of their reasons were the same.. About three years ago, an incident happened that left many fans and Americans not happy and not proud. This incident involved a NFL player who kneeled during the national anthem performance, and it causes an uproar. This player was Colin Kaepernick, and he played for the 49ers when this incident happened. Colin got a lot of hate and backlash because he decided to kneel instead of stand. He felt it was not wrong and he DID mean to disrespect the country — He said, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said, via NFL.com. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
This caused Colin to be fired from the NFL and he lost his career as a football player, and I am sure this took a toll on him. Many people agreed with him being fired, but some did not agree and thought he should have another chance and what he did was not bad enough to cause him to lose his career and job. This is why so many artists who were asked to perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime declined. They all are on his side and do not support what the NFL is doing to Colin. They believe he should not have been fired and continue to support him. The NFL worried they would not find someone to perform, but they ended up finding three different artists and bands to perform. The performances this year consisted of the band Maroon Five, the rapper Travis Scott, and another rapper, Big Boy. Big Boy is part of a band called Outkast, but he performed without them.
Adam Levine was basically the main part of the show, and the other two only had small parts and only performed for about five minutes or less. Many people say they did not enjoy the performance and also did not enjoy Adam taking off his many shirts during the performance, and thought it was not appropriate, but some did not mind him doing this. A lot of people did not like the variety of music, as Maroon Five is pop, and the other two are rap; they did not think it flowed well together. The NFL had a small variety to choose from, however they got what they could.
I did not enjoy the show, as the performance was not well put together and did not flow right. Most halftime shows are overdone and out there, and this one was just slow and not too out there. I think they could have put on a better show, but hopefully next year will be better. I feel that the halftime show was not enough for the Super Bowl and it would have been better if they could have gotten one of the performers they had originally wanted.
