Meteorologists are forecasting that the Draconic Meteor Shower is going to reach its peak this week, offering people a chance to witness a light show up in the sky. This meteor shower happens annually every year, in early October. It is an amazing sight to see and here’s everything you need to know about this bizarre event.
The active period of this meteor shower is from October 6 – 10, with the peak night of the showers being October 8. This event occurs when earth passes through debris left from the Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, which is located in the constellation of Hydra, approximately 450 million kilometers away from earth. As earth passes through the trail of debris left by the comet, that debris burns up in the atmosphere, creating the streak of light that you see. A typical rate of meteors is just about 10 meteors an hour. However, there always is a chance of an outburst where viewers can see hundreds, and sometimes even thousands, of meteors in the sky. Though this isn’t normal, it is a possibility.
To see the event, it is best to look towards the northwestern sky just after sunset. That is where the meteors are the most prominent, but they can also appear anywhere else in the sky. This should be an interesting sight for all to see.
