This is a review of the 1997 animated film “Perfect Blue”, by Satoshi Kon. My expectations going into this film were high because of my previous experience watching “Paprika” , another Satoshi Kon film.
“Perfect Blue” did more than just exceed my expectations however; it showed me what all films could be. The film is an excellent psychological thriller that keeps you second guessing yourself the entire one hour and twenty-one minute run time. I couldn’t look away from the screen the entire time I was watching it.
From the start of the film, the main character Mima’s psyche is delved into. You see from her point of view the entire time; Especially her newly found stardom, that leads her down a spiraling path of confusion, madness, and suffering. The film basically settles the viewer into the mind of Mima, making it seem as if you yourself are feeling the exact emotions she is experiencing. This aspect of the film gave me a real thrill towards the end, making me feel all sorts of things that I normally wouldn’t while watching anything else.
In the film’s climax I genuinely felt my heart race and a sense of worry and fear come over me. My world didn’t feel real after the end, it was completely disconnected from me. In my opinion I think everyone should absolutely watch this film; I don’t see how someone couldn’t like it. I give Satoshi Kon’s “Perfect Blue” a 10/10
