On September 4th, 2025, last week at the time of writing this, multiple digital markets for video games had crashed, making it impossible to buy anything for 2 to 3 hours, give or take. Why did this happen? Was there some plot against game seller’s for some odd reason? No, one of the biggest game releases of the year happened. Hollow Knight Silksong, a game by the elusive Team Cherry, set to release at 8AM that morning had caused mass internet traffic, crashing the stores.
Silksong, the game that caused this issue, had been under a lot of specific conditions; The biggest condition being, it’s massive ever growing 7 year hype. Silksong had originally been announced back in 2018, claiming to be coming out soon. Soon, apparently, meant a wait until September 2025. In this time frame, the fandom of the previous game, Hollow Knight, grew bigger and bigger, creating a massive fan base that went insane for that 7 year time period waiting for the sequel.
On that foretold day, September 4, 2025, the flood gates had been unleashed, causing a mass of internet traffic so intense it had crashed markets such as: Steam, Microsoft, the Nintendo Eshop, Playstation, etc. The people who had waited so long for the game to come out had delayed the game from coming out for 3 more hours. A game release of this magnitude hasn’t been seen before making it an even more impressive feat, especially for the small 3 man dev team, Team Cherry.
