Everyone hears about ChatGPT, or just AI in general in schools. Whether it’s about students cheating or just using it for inspiration, at one point or another if school is a topic, AI will be brought up.
In my opinion, AI could be a good resource for students. Artificial Intelligence responds instantly, so if a student wanted an assignment proofread, they could put it into an AI software.
Many will point out that students could use AI to cheat, but when I talk about using AI in school, I’m talking about using AI to proofread or for inspiration for papers. Cheating shouldn’t be done, besides, it’s pretty easy for a teacher to realize if someone used AI to write a paper.
AI can make certain aspects of a class that one struggles with more understandable. We’ve all been in a spot where we’ve been confused in class, and when you ask the teacher, sometimes it just makes you more confused. AI can break these lessons down into a way that’s more easy for students to understand.
According to MIT Technology Review, teachers started having a more positive outlook on ChatGPT after three months of its release. David Smith, a UK bioscience education professor at Sheffield Hallam University stated that “They don’t want it vilified; they want to be taught how to use it,” referring to how students feel about ChatGPT. Students would rather learn how to use it to be productive rather than be told how bad it is.
Educators have started taking to the idea that ChatGPT could change the education system for the better. There is still fear around the idea, but Jessica Stansbury, director of teaching and learning excellence at the University of Baltimore stated, “But we do our students a disservice if we get stuck on fear.”
How do you feel about the use of ChatGPT or any AI in schools? Do you think it would be productive if students used it?
