Every year the sophomore class of Palestine High School goes to Lincoln Trail College for something called Career Day. It is a day where students pick two careers and then have an opportunity to be taught by an adult professional in that field about that career. This allows students to gain insight on the careers they’ve chosen and see if those careers would suit them. People that have gone and worked or are working in these careers are there to give first hand knowledge to students.
Career Days help a lot of students find what they want to do but where did the concept originate? The concept of Career Days started with colleges and universities in the 19th century who began organizing events to connect students with potential employers.
During World War 1 and World War 2, the need for skilled workers grew bigger and bigger. These Career Days played a crucial role in recruiting people for the war effort and creating awareness in labor shortages in multiple industries. This marked the huge shift towards more organized career events.
Today most schools have such events to interact with the students and help them figure out what career they want to go into. Because it takes place during their high school years, it helps students plan ahead for life after graduation.
