This past Sunday, January 11, a few of the high school students went to the VFW banquet to honor our local VOD winners in Robinson. The local winners for Palestine were:
1st: Natalie Yargus
2nd: Raylynn Rodgers
3rd: Kinsler Beabout
But this Sunday, Mrs Hyde and Natalie will be traveling to Casey for the District banquet, because Natalie has won 2nd place in the District competition, and Mrs Hyde will be getting an award for the teacher of the year!
Everyone did such an amazing job, Congratulations to everyone that participated. The VFW VOD competition has been around for a long time, and at one time, almost every school in Crawford County used to do them, but now the only schools that do the VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy competitions are Palestine, New Hebron Christian School and Robinson High School.
Every year students write an essay about whatever topic it is that year. The VFW essay is not particularly an easy essay to write, and this essay requires a lot of thinking. In the end, it’s worth it, though, because winners at every level win cash prizes. The grand prize is $35,000.
