Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
November 21, 2018
The 92nd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will kick off the holiday season on Thursday, November 22. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. and will feature 16 giant balloons, 43 novelty balloons, heritage balloons, balloonicles, trycallons, and balloonheads.
In 1924, the annual Thanksgiving parade started in Newark, New Jersey, by Louis Bamberger at the Bamberger’s store and then was transferred to New York City by Macy’s. In New York, the employees marched to Macy’s head store on 34th Street dressed in vibrant costumes.
The route has been scaled back to a length of two-and-a-half miles from the original 6 miles, the size of the parade itself has became bigger with dozens of balloons, marching bands, celebrities and cheerleaders. Although it is called the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” Santa Claus remains the show-stopper, and his arrival in Herald Square still brings in the Christmas season in New York.
The new characters portrayed in balloons include the Saiyan warrior Goku from “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” and Fleck, Bjorn, Jojo and Hugg, the elf stars of Netflix’s “The Christmas Chronicles.”
There will also be Go Bowling balloonicles, as the bowling ball, bowling pins and bowling shoe cars try for strikes along the Parade route.
Some favorites will return, including Charlie Brown, Diary of A Wimpy Kid, The Elf on the Shelf, The Grinch, and the Pillsbury Doughboy.
Four new floats will debut including Elf Pets by The Elf on the Shelf, Fantasy Chocolate Factory by Kinder, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Nickelodeon, and Splashing Safari Adventure by Kalahari Resorts and Conventions.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
