We all know the saying “April showers, bring May flowers,” but what about the other forms of weather during springtime, not just precipitation?
The citizens of Crawford County will never forget what happened around this time last year. The tornado that struck the county on March 31st has increased the fear we originally had of tornadoes. This horrific incident has made us more aware of the damage these storms can cause and made us more cautious on how we handle these events. Last week, we had our first scare since the natural disaster hit our area last year.
Tuesday, February 27th, the radar was showing severe weather conditions that were to lead into Wednesday the 28th. I, along with many other natives, was very worried about this incoming weather. I made sure I was home in case the storm was to exceed the initial expectations, especially with the circumstance I was in last year –driving through it. I think a lot of others were thinking this same thing.
These scary weather conditions are gaining a sense of normalcy during this time of year. This is because of the many shifts in temperature (a perk to living in the midwest, am I right?) Tornadoes form when the air is warm, moist, and unstable, and a cold front runs through the area. This can cause extreme thunderstorms generating hail and damaging winds, and if strong enough, a tornado. When these events occur it is best to stay home in a room with no windows on a lower level, like a bathroom or basement. I will be sure to take these precautions the next time this weather hits our area, and I advise you to as well! Stay safe out there!
