This Friday and Saturday, from 7 to 10 p.m. (post-mortem), come phace your phobias at the Palestine High School’s Drama Club’s Phobia-Themed Haunted House. This tenth annual haunted house will cost five dollars to get in, and you will be guided through experiments-gone-wrong, poltergeist-filled nurseries, and the abyssal void, and so much more!
I personally am involved in the haunted house, although you probably won’t see me due to the nature of my room (no spoilers, but feel free to guess in the comments). As with every year, much of the supplies were bought by students specifically for the event, so come support the budding thespians this weekend.
The first Palestine High School Haunted House back in 2013 was not what you would expect-or maybe exactly what you would expect-from a celebrated high school tradition. It was first discussed three days in advance! The junior class was low on funds for prom, and they were running out of ideas. Finally they decided on a haunted house, and it was a huge success. It brought in people from far and near, and gave enough funding to pay for nearly all the costs of prom. The next year, people still wanted the Haunted house… but the now senior class no longer needed the money, and so their class sponsor, Mrs. Will, talked to Mrs. Hyde and asked if perhaps Drama Club wanted to take it over, as it was loads of fun AND was a massive money maker. And so Mrs. Hyde took it under her wing, and turned it into a highly anticipated Drama Club event, which it remains to this day.
According to Mrs. Hyde, “One of the best things about Drama Club’s annual Haunted House is that it gives Drama Club members who don’t want to act on stage a chance to be involved in a different kind of Drama Club production. Of course, they’re not thinking about the fact that they’re still acting and they’re still on stage — just not the one in the gym!”
