Elections!

Lindsay Ryan, Contributor

It’s that time of the year again — class elections! Every year, students run or nominate themselves or their peers for different office positions. Office positions include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Student Senate Representatives. Each position is important to the success of Student Senate and their class, each having their own responsibilities.

The President runs Student Senate, is given large tasks, and is able to delegate different projects and ideas to make sure they are accomplished. The president creates ideas and helps with the bond between students and Student Senate. The Vice President helps the president, supervises a variety of tasks, and tends to be the first called if the president needs assistance. The Secretary keeps notes during meetings and helps keep everyone organized and in line. The Treasurer keeps track of the checks and balance of money. They are also in charge of the soda machine and those who help keep it stocked.

You may be wondering, “Could I run for a position?”  Yes, anyone can run for a class office or President of Student Senate. Only students who are elected President, Vice President, and Student Senate Representatives of their class are eligible to run for an office on Student Senate.

So why should you run for an office?  Student Senate sponsor, Mr. Will, said, “This is a great leadership opportunity” and “an opportunity to make a change.” As a bonus, you may want to put this on your resume when applying to colleges.

The purpose of Student Senate is to be a part of a group among others in the school that try to make events happen. Being a part of this group is also great because they do many things throughout the year, including putting together Homecoming, Jag Day, blood Drives, and the Christmas party.

Mr. Will says that he wants students to learn from this experience and that they will “learn leadership skills, organizing skills, and a variety of other things.”

Students who are a part of Student Senate must devote time each month to discuss plans and organize events. “Even if you did not make an event or help with organizing something, we support one another and the school,” says Mr. Will.
